Elder Board Candidate
Scott Edwards
Scott Edwards received Christ as his Savior at the age of nine, largely through the ministry of his parents. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Arizona and has been active in the custom homebuilding industry for nearly 35 years, currently overseeing operations for Calvis Wyant Luxury Homes in Scottsdale. Scott and his wife Laurie have worshipped at Scottsdale Bible Church since they were married in 1990. He has served three previous terms on the Elder board, was part of the SBC team tasked with providing construction oversight of the Compelled by Grace Shea campus redesign, and is currently serving on the design and planning team for the SBC Tempe campus. Scott is a graduate of the Timothy Leadership Training program and currently serves on the TLT leadership team. He and Laurie have served in leadership roles for multiple SBC enrichment classes over the years. He has previously served on the committee for Phoenix Capernaum Young Life, a ministry dedicated to sharing the gospel with high school youth and young adults with disabilities. Scott and Laurie are blessed to be parents to their adult son Tyler and daughter Kelsey (married to Steven Berryman), and they have arguably the world’s three most adorable grandchildren.

The member-elected Nominating Committee meets throughout the year to consider men from all SBC campuses who have demonstrated godly character, integrity, service, and other biblical qualifications for eldership. They then recommend qualified candidates to the current Elder Board whose members pray over the list, and after further deliberations, formalize the candidate list for final approval by you, the members.

Elders have a responsibility to consider many factors in deciding who and how many candidates to put forth each year. In looking to the upcoming year, it was concluded that one additional Elder was appropriate this time around.

Generally, SBC takes note of people who are actively engaged in the church with their time, talent, and treasure and have shown themselves to be wise leaders. It is from that pool of people that we find leaders who are recommended as Elder candidates.
-
Elders serve four-year terms and must be off the Elder Board for at least one year before they can be elevated to the role again.

Being an Elder at SBC is a tall order and is not for the faint of heart! Elders generally meet monthly as a full Board. Each member also sits on at least one of our board committees (Risk, Finance, Admin, Nominating, etc.) which generally meet once per month as well. The Elders also meet once a month for 'Soul Care,' a meeting where they tend to the spiritual needs of one another. In addition to this, Elders are expected to be active in the life of the church.
